About SideQuests Travel
At SideQuests, we believe the most meaningful travel happens when you stop rushing and start paying attention: to the place you're in, the people around you, and the version of yourself that shows up when you finally slow down. This journey through Peru is built around that idea: creating space for connection, reflection, laughter, and those unplanned moments that often become the most memorable. We're excited to have Ryan leading this experience.
A North Carolina native who left a decade-long tech sales career to become a full-time digital nomad, Ryan has spent the last four years traveling to 35 countries with one guiding belief: the people make the experience more than the place does. He brings a natural ability to build community and create spaces where connection happens easily. Whether he's leading a deep conversation over dinner or keeping things light and ridiculous on a long bus ride, Ryan's grounded energy helps everyone feel welcomed, seen, and ready to be fully present for the journey ahead.

Welcome to Peru!
-
After an included breakfast, we'll meet in the hotel lobby and head out into the streets of Lima. This colonial city has been layering history on top of history for centuries, and it shows in the most incredible way. We'll wander through the grand historic center, past ornate colonial facades, bustling plazas, and centuries-old cathedrals that somehow coexist seamlessly with the energy of a modern South American city. We'll visit the Government Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, the stunning Cathedral Basilica, and the iconic Plaza Mayor — one of the great public squares in all of Latin America. Then, we go underground. Beneath the Monumental Convent of San Francisco, lies a labyrinth of catacombs that once served as the city's burial ground. It's eerie, fascinating, and unlike anything most people have ever seen. After the tour, we'll return to the hotel to freshen up before tonight’s special dinner.
-
Breakfast (Included Meal) A buffet breakfast featuring American classics alongside traditional Peruvian staples — the perfect start to the day ahead.
-
This private guided walking tour brings Lima's layered colonial and Inca history to life through the streets of the historic center. Our expert English-speaking guide will weave together the stories, legends, and cultural significance behind every landmark we pass, making the history feel as vivid and alive as the city itself.
-
At approximately 7:00 PM, we'll be picked up for our welcome dinner at the extraordinary Huaca Pucllana Restaurant: a world-class dining experience set alongside an ancient pre-Inca pyramid rising dramatically out of the middle of the city. The food is exceptional: fresh Peruvian seafood, vibrant native vegetables, and the kind of bold, layered flavors that have made Lima one of the greatest food cities on earth. But honestly? It's not just about the food. This is the moment the group comes together for the first time. We’ll bond over incredible dishes, under the glow of an illuminated 1,500-year-old pyramid. Can you imagine a better way for the trip to begin?
-
We'll return to our hotel in Miraflores, buzzing from the first night of what is going to be an unforgettable week.
Day 2
Colonial Lima & a Welcome Dinner Inside an Ancient Pyramid
-
After our included breakfast, we'll check out of our hotel in Lima and head to the airport for our included domestic flight up into the Andes Mountains. And up is the right word: Cusco sits at 11,152 feet above sea level. From the moment you step off the plane and take your first breath of thin mountain air, you'll know you're somewhere completely different. The city that greets you is extraordinary: cobblestone streets, Incan stonework tucked beneath Spanish colonial architecture, the smell of woodsmoke and fresh bread drifting out of doorways, mountains rising in every direction. It's a lot to take in, and that's exactly what today is for. The afternoon and evening are intentionally unscheduled. We'll get settled into our hotel, take a gentle walk if you're feeling up to it, and let Cusco come to us. Drink plenty of water, take it slow, and trust that your body will adjust. The city rewards patience and everything we have planned for the days ahead is absolutely worth it.

Day 3
Lima to Cusco — Welcome to the Andes
-
After an included breakfast, we'll take a short walk from the hotel into San Blas: Cusco's most artistic and atmospheric neighborhood. San Blas is a delightful labyrinth of narrow uphill lanes, whitewashed walls, and workshops where local artisans have been practicing their craft for generations. We'll spend our morning in a hands-on Peruvian cooking class at one of the neighborhood's most beloved restaurants, a gorgeous space with a colonial-style patio and the kind of culinary energy that makes you want to immediately move to Peru and cook for the rest of your life. Expert local chefs will walk us through the preparation of traditional Andean dishes — the ingredients, the techniques, the stories behind the food — and then we'll sit down together and eat everything we’ve made. It's one of those mornings that sounds nice on paper and turns out to be genuinely one of the highlights of the whole trip. After lunch, we head out for a guided Cusco City Tour that will completely reframe everything you thought you knew about the Inca Empire. We're talking massive stone fortresses, gilded temples, a cathedral built on top of a palace: layer after layer of history stacked on top of itself in the most dramatic way. The rest of the evening is yours to wander the famous Plaza de Armas, find a rooftop bar, shop for something beautiful in the markets of San Blas, or just soak in the romantic beauty of Cusco at night.

Day 4
Peruvian Cooking Class & Cusco City Tour
-
After an early included breakfast at the hotel, we'll load up and depart Cusco by private transport, descending into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The valley is a wide, lush, impossibly green corridor carved by the Urubamba River and flanked on all sides by terraced mountainsides and snow-capped peaks. Our first stop is the Pisac Archaeological Site, perched dramatically above the valley floor, followed by time at the famous Pisac Handicraft Market. We'll continue through the valley to Urubamba for a traditional Andean lunch before heading to the remarkable fortress town of Ollantaytambo for our final excursion of the day. Tonight we stay in the valley and close to tomorrow's train, and one train ride away from Machu Picchu. Pack just a small overnight bag for this one. Your main luggage will be waiting safely back in Cusco when we return.
-
A buffet breakfast featuring American classics alongside traditional Peruvian staples — the perfect start to the day ahead.
-
Our first stop is the spectacular Pisac ruins, high above the valley floor with views that will stop you in your tracks. Inca religious temples, astronomical observatories, and sweeping agricultural terraces stretch across the mountainside in a way that's almost hard to believe humans actually built. Our private guide will bring the history and spiritual significance of this extraordinary site to life at every turn.
-
After the ruins, we'll drop down into the famous Pisac Market. This market is one of the most vibrant and authentic in all of Peru. Local Quechua artisans sell handwoven textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and goods you genuinely will not find anywhere else. Budget some time here (and some luggage space!).
-
We'll continue through the valley to the town of Urubamba for a traditional (included) lunch featuring regional Andean cuisine.
-
In the afternoon, we'll explore the extraordinary Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town where the original street grid has been continuously inhabited for over 500 years.bove the town isone of the most dramatic fortress complexes in the Americas: rhis is the site where the Inca actually defeated the Spanish in battle. You can feel the weight of that history when you're standing there looking up at those walls. Our private guide will make sure you leave with the full story.
-
We'll check in for the night at the beautiful Casa Andina Premium Sacred Valley in Urubamba. Rest up because tomorrow is the day everyone's been waiting for!
Day 5
Sacred Valley of the Incas & Overnight in Urubamba
-
After an early included breakfast, we transfer to the train station to board the Vistadome Observatory Train toward Aguas Calientes, — the gateway to Machu Picchu. The 2.5-hour journey winds through the Sacred Valley and deep into the cloud forest, with the landscapes growing more dramatic and lush with every passing mile. From Aguas Calientes, we'll board a shuttle bus for the 30-minute ride up the mountain to the ancient citadel itself. And then you're there and no amount no. No amount of photos or documentaries or descriptions—including this one, can fully prepare you for the moment Machu Picchu reveals itself. It's one of those places that hits differently in person, and we can't wait for you to experience it. After our private guided tour, we'll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes for free time and lunch on your own before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private driver will be waiting to transfer us back to Cusco in time for dinner.

This isn't just a transfer, it's an experience in and of itself. The Vistadome Observatory Train (included) features panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, access to an open-air observatory car, and live onboard cultural performances of traditional Andean music and the Saqra dance show. The scenery of the Sacred Valley and cloud forest passing outside the windows is extraordinary. Sit back and take it all in.
-
From Aguas Calientes, we'll board a shuttle bus (included) for the winding 30-minute ride up the mountain through dense cloud forest to the entrance of the citadel. Or, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can take the 1200+ steps up to Machu Picchu on your own two feet!
-
Our expert local guide will lead us through a comprehensive private tour of the ancient citadel, covering the Agricultural Zone, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple, the Royal Tomb, the Sacred Fountains, and the iconic Guardhouse with its sweeping panoramic views over the entire site. The history, the architecture, and the spiritual significance make every stone tell a story. This is the moment the whole trip has been building toward, and we're doing it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions specific to this trip? Here are some common questions about our adventure.
-
Our trips attract a diverse community, primarily LGBTQ+ travelers in their 20s-60s who are looking for meaningful connections and authentic experiences. We welcome allies and friends of all identities who share our values of inclusivity, curiosity, and openness.
-
We keep our groups intentionally small—typically 16-24 travelers—to foster genuine connections and allow for more intimate, authentic local experiences that wouldn't be possible with larger groups.
-
Each trip is slightly different, but most SideQuests include:
Boutique accommodations
Most meals (with options)
Excursions + guided activities
A bilingual local guide
Private group transportation
Your hosts (hi, that’s us!)
You can view all the trip-specific inclusions on each individual trip page. Airfare to and from the destination is not included. You'll receive a detailed packing list and itinerary before departure.
-
Not at all! Our trips are great for all experience levels. We’ve got you. Our trips are built with support and guidance baked in, from our group chats and Zoom intros to arrival instructions and packing tips. You don’t need to be a seasoned traveler, just someone ready to say yes.
-
Yes! Most people do. We design our trips to foster connection from day one, and many travelers arrive solo but leave with lifelong friends (and at least one new group chat). SideQuests are specifically designed to foster connection, so coming alone is actually the perfect way to experience our trips. We create plenty of opportunities to bond with the group while also respecting everyone's need for personal space and independence.
-
We offer both shared and private accommodation options. Many solo travelers choose to share rooms (with separate beds) to save on costs and enhance the community experience. If you prefer your own space, single supplements are available for an additional fee (listed during checkout).
-
We strive to make our trips as accessible as possible and work with travelers on a case-by-case basis. Some destinations have inherent accessibility challenges, but we're committed to finding solutions whenever possible. Please contact us directly to discuss your specific needs.
-
If your booking is still pending (meaning the trip hasn’t been confirmed yet), you’re eligible for a full refund — including your 25% deposit.
Once the trip is confirmed (after 10 travelers have booked), your deposit becomes non-refundable. If you need to cancel after confirmation, you’ll receive a Credit Voucher for the amount paid (minus a $100 cancellation fee).
After the 90-day mark before the trip, all payments become non-refundable, since hotels, transportation, and activities have already been paid for. Any exceptions at that point are at the discretion of our local partners.
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance — it really is worth it.
-
Not at all! While our trips are centered around queer community and joy, allies are absolutely welcome — as long as you’re here with respect, openness, and a good sense of humor!
-
Yes! Our booking partner (TrovaTrip) offers payment plans through Affirm — you can reserve your spot with a 25% deposit and pay the rest in installments.
-
Most trips include a mix of walking, light hikes, or outdoor activities — but we always include downtime, optional excursions, and flexible pacing. You do you, with a group that gets it.
-
Yes. Peru’s major tourist destinations like Lima’s Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods are especially LGBTQ+ friendly with a growing visible gay scene. While Cusco and the Sacred Valley are more traditional and conservative, the touristy areas are welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers and same-sex relationships are legal throughout the country. Peru is more socially conservative in rural areas, so a little discretion outside the main tourist hubs is appropriate (true for any couple).
-
Yes. As a major tourist hub, Cusco is welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially around the Plaza de Armas and the San Blas neighborhood. It has a small but friendly gay scene with a handful of gay-friendly bars. It’s a smaller, more traditional city than Lima, so the vibe is more relaxed and culture-focused than a big nightlife destination.
-
Not for the standard visit. You reach Machu Picchu by train and bus, then walk guided circuits around the citadel on uneven stone steps for two to three hours. The visit requires a moderate amount of walking but is accessible to anyone in reasonable shape. The hard hikes are the optional add-ons and trails from the citadel, like Machu Picchu Mountain (about 1,600 steep steps to an epic bird’s-eye viewpoint) or Huayna Picchu, and neither is required to experience the site. Machu Picchu also sits lower than Cusco, so acclimatizing first makes it feel easier.
-
From Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, the scenic train to Aguas Calientes takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. We ride the Vistadome Observatory Train, with panoramic windows and an open-air observatory car, so the journey through the cloud forest is part of the experience rather than just transport.
-
Most travelers fly internationally roundtrip to Lima, and then connect to Cusco. For our group tour, fly into Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM). On the SideQuests itinerary, the roundtrip domestic flight from Lima to Cusco (CUZ) is included, so you only need to book your international flight into and out of Lima.
-
Cusco sits at 11,152 feet, and altitude affects everyone differently. Mild symptoms like light-headedness, shortness of breath, or a headache usually ease after the first 24 hours. We build acclimatization time into the itinerary. Hydrate, skip alcohol the first night (it hits harder up here), and take it slow. Talk to your doctor about altitude medication if you’re concerned.
-
US, Canadian, UK, EU, and Australian passport holders don’t need a visa for tourism stays up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid at least six months beyond arrival. Machu Picchu entry requires your passport details about 60 days ahead, and SideQuests handles all Machu Picchu ticketing for the group.
-
No vaccines are required to enter Peru from the US, Canada, UK, EU, or Australia. The CDC recommends being up to date on routine vaccines, plus hepatitis A and typhoid for most travelers. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended if you're visiting the Amazon, including our optional Amazon Extension. This would need to be done at least 10 days before you arrive in a risk area. For the classic Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu route, yellow fever hasn't traditionally been considered necessary, though CDC guidance can change during outbreaks, so check the CDC's Peru page 4 to 6 weeks before your trip.
Where You’ll Stay
We've selected accommodations that reflect Peru's spirit while keeping comfort front and center. In Lima, we spend our first two nights at nhow Lima in the heart of Miraflores. nhow is a design-forward 5-star boutique hotel adjacent to Kennedy Park. The breakfast is something to brag about, and the rooftop is the gem of the property.
In Cusco, we check into Casa Andina Premium Cusco, set in a restored colonial-era building just blocks from the Plaza de Armas and the iconic neighborhood of San Blas. It's warm, elegant, and exactly what you want to come back to after a day of exploring.
For our night in the Sacred Valley, we stay at Casa Andina Premium Valle Sagrado in Urubamba, a garden retreat surrounded by the Andes. Enjoy its on-site planetarium for stargazing before our big day at Machu Picchu.
All accommodations feature private bathrooms and daily buffet breakfast. Solo travelers can choose between shared rooms (with another solo traveler, partner or friend), or a completely private room for an additional supplement. If a friend or partner is coming with you but booking separately, no need to worry — we send out a questionnaire to get your roommate of choice or rooming preferences in order ahead of the trip.
