South Africa Gay Group Trip: Cape Town and Safari in the Greater Kruger
9 Days, 8 Nights
April 17th - 25th, 2027
About This Trip
This is the big one. Join SideQuests founder Matthew for 9 days that start in Cape Town, one of the most beautiful (and gayest) cities in the world, and end in the bush at Idube Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand, one of the best places in Africa to see leopards. It's a luxury trip from start to finish: 5-star stays, nearly all meals, private touring, domestic flights and a small-plane flight into the safari lodge are all included.
Matthew has done safaris in the Sabi Sand twice and calls this a "holy sh*t, I can't believe I'm here" kind of trip. Cape Town days are full and social, with long dinners at some of the city's best restaurants. Safari days follow the rhythm of the bush: early drives, slow lunches, afternoon tea, sundowners and dinners under the stars.
The group is capped at 19 including Matthew, so every game vehicle feels like a private drive with friends. Read all about it below.

Meet Your Host
Hi, I'm Matthew, founder of SideQuests Travel and one half of @michaelandmatt. I'm a travel writer and photographer based in Portland, Oregon, and I'll be hosting this trip myself.
I've traveled South Africa extensively with our partners at Rhino Africa and done two safaris in the Sabi Sand, and this is the trip I've been dreaming of sharing with our community.
Expect a welcome happy hour on night one, long dinners at some of Cape Town's best restaurants and a host who knows everyone's name by breakfast. I'll also be the one with the camera that never stops, so you'll go home with photos of yourself on safari, not just of the animals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions specific to this trip? Here are some common questions about our South Africa adventure.
-
Our trips attract a diverse community, primarily LGBTQ+ travelers in their 20s-60s who are looking for meaningful connections and authentic experiences. We welcome allies and friends of all identities who share our values of inclusivity, curiosity, and openness.
-
12 to 18 travelers plus your host, capped at 19 including Matthew. Small enough that every game vehicle feels like a private drive with friends.
-
8 nights in 5-star stays, nearly all meals (four group dinners in Cape Town plus all meals and afternoon teas at the lodge), the Cape Peninsula and Cape Winelands day tours, twice-daily game drives with a ranger and tracker, domestic flights including the small-plane transfer to the lodge, and private transfers throughout. International flights, most drinks, lunch on the Cape Town free day, travel insurance and tips are not included.
-
This trip is booked directly with our safari partner, Rhino Africa's Out2Africa, and their booking terms apply. We'll share the full deposit and cancellation terms with you before you book.
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage. It really is worth it.
-
A 30% deposit secures your spot, and the balance is due 60 days before departure. Paying Rhino Africa directly keeps pricing lower by avoiding extra card and currency fees.
-
Yes! Most people do. Between the welcome happy hour, long Cape Town dinners and shared game drives, you'll have a crew long before the first leopard sighting. We create plenty of chances to bond with the group, while respecting everyone's need for personal space and independence.
-
Not at all! Our trips are great for all experience levels. We’ve got you. Our trips are built with support and guidance baked in, from our group chats and Zoom intros to arrival instructions and packing tips. You don’t need to be a seasoned traveler, just someone ready to say yes.
-
The base price is for a shared room with another traveler of the same gender, and we'll pair you with a roommate if you're traveling solo. Single rooms are available from $12,545 per person, subject to availability.
-
Not at all! Our trips are centered around queer community and joy, and allies are absolutely welcome as long as you’re here with respect, openness, and a good sense of humor.
-
This is a relaxed pace. Cape Town days involve easy walking, some stairs and uneven paths at viewpoints, and the safari is mostly seated in an open vehicle on bumpy tracks with early starts. There are no strenuous hikes, though Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula have optional short walks if you want them.
-
We strive to make our trips as accessible as possible and work with travelers on a case-by-case basis. Some destinations have inherent accessibility challenges, but we're committed to finding solutions whenever possible. Please contact us directly to discuss your specific needs.
-
Fly into Cape Town (CPT) and out of Johannesburg (JNB). It saves time and money because there's no backtracking at the end of the trip. Plan to land in Cape Town by mid-afternoon on Day 1, or add a pre-trip night.
-
We meet in Cape Town on April 17 for a welcome happy hour and dinner, and the trip ends on April 25 after the flight from the lodge to Johannesburg. Plan for flights home leaving Johannesburg after about 5:00 PM.
-
US, Canadian, UK and most EU passport holders currently don't need a visa for short tourist stays. South Africa is strict about passports: bring one with at least two completely blank visa pages and at least 30 days' validity beyond your departure date, though we recommend six months. Check your own country's rules before you book.
-
South Africa was the first country in Africa to legalize same-sex marriage, and its constitution protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cape Town is one of the most welcoming cities on the continent, with a lively queer scene around De Waterkant. Attitudes can be more conservative in rural areas, and like any big city, Cape Town calls for normal street smarts. Your host and our local partners will help you navigate both.
-
Yes. The bush flight has tight weight limits, so your main luggage travels to and from the lodge by road and you only carry a small soft bag on the plane. We'll send exact limits and packing tips well before departure.
-
April is autumn in South Africa and one of the best times to visit. Cape Town days are usually mild and sunny with cooler evenings, and in the bush you can expect warm afternoons with chilly early-morning game drives.
The Sabi Sand is in a malaria area, with lower risk as the rainy season ends. Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about whether antimalarials are right for you, and pack insect repellent.
-
Layers are key. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves for early game drives, plus neutral colors like khaki, olive and tan for the bush (skip bright white and camo). For Cape Town, pack comfortable walking shoes, something smart-casual for dinners and a windbreaker. Sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars and a soft-sided bag will all earn their place.
-
Yes. Rhino Africa can arrange pre- or post-trip extensions as a separate booking, whether that's extra time in Cape Town, the Garden Route or Victoria Falls.
There's no group night in Johannesburg because most international flights leave in the evening, so you'll connect the same day. If your flight home is earlier, we can add an airport hotel night.
About SideQuests Travel
-
Hi, I'm Matthew, co-founder of SideQuests Travel. I created SideQuests because I didn't want to just see the world, I wanted to make new friends and build-up my community while doing it. I wanted to see an amazing place in the world and come home feeling changed, so I started hosting trips for people who wanted the same.
-
SideQuests runs small-group adventures for LGBTQ+ travelers who want to see the world while actually connecting with others and themselves.
-
The moment you book, you're added to the trip's WhatsApp chat and invited to our monthly Zoom calls, so by the time you land, you already know a bit about each person embarking on the adventure with you. On most group tours, you finally click with the others right as everyone packs to leave,
but on our trips, that happens before anyone boards a plane.
We offer optional journal prompts and meditations for those that would like to participate, and a community workshop mid-trip where people share stories and truly get the opportunity to connect on a very real level.
-
SideQuests Travel is for everyone who wants a fun, community-focused tour that’s adventurous, welcoming, and transformative.
Every hotel, guide, and operator is vetted through an LGBTQ+ lens ensuring that travel is not only safe, but enthusiastically welcoming.
Come solo, come with a friend, or a partner, and leave with a new group of friends and strengthened sense of community. We're not just building great experiences, we're building a supportive network of people you'll literally want to plan your next trip alongside.
